Pastor Gregg received his Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1988. |
The Story ~ Why Champions Way Church?
In 2014, Pastor Gregg shared a vision for a church with a group of friends. It was a vision for a church that would intentionally connect people to God, then help them experience a winning life through a successful marriage, family, career, etc. It is a vision best summarized as a passion for people to win in life by becoming "Champions in Life." Jesus called this "life lived to its fullest" or as some translations record it . . . "an abundant life." (You can read more about that vision below.)
These friends started praying. As they prayed it became apparent that God wanted them to go forward in the start of a new church. As this group prayed, God began to move their hearts to north St. Johns county. You're encouraged to join us in this grand adventure, as we continue to pray and seek God for His guidance.

The "Champion's Way" ~ An Explanation of the Eight Wins
Relationship with God
The spiritual win is the most important win! As we become “Christ First Christians,” we develop into fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ who are completely secure in God’s redeeming love, and empowered by God’s Holy Spirit, then we are able to experience overwhelming victory in every other area of life! This is the winning life... the Champions Way. Champions place the Lordship of Jesus Christ as our number one priority. This win equips, empowers, and enables us to enjoy a winning life!
2 Peter 1:3 “His (Jesus’) divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness.”
Romans 8:37 (NLT) “No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.”
Relationships with Others
We win relationally as we become people of authentic love and grace. Champions treat their spouses, family, and friends with joy, grace, honor, and love. A major step in this win happens when we celebrate and accept each other as God created us. These type of authentic relationships inspire and encourage growth and confidence in every area of life.
Ephesians 5:1-2 (NCV) “You are God’s children whom He loves, so try to be like Him. 2 Live a life of love just as Christ loved us and gave Himself for us as a sweet-smelling offering and sacrifice to God.”
Priorities and Ambitions
We win with right priorities and ambitions. Champions seek first the kingdom of God. Champions understand the law of the harvest. We reap what we sow; we win by prioritizing our ambitions and planting the seeds that will produce the harvest of our dreams.
Matthew 6:33 (NLT) “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.”
John 10:10b (HCSB) “I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance.”
Galatians 6:7-9 “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
Mental & Emotional Health
We win internally by becoming disciples who understand the "battlefield of the mind." Champions display emotional health and mental strength. This comes from guarding our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus as disciples who are secure in God’s love and promises. We win emotionally by allowing God to heal our emotional wounds. We win mentally as we replace our improper thoughts with God’s truth.
Romans 8:6 (NCV) “If people’s thinking is controlled by the sinful self, there is death. But if their thinking is controlled by the Spirit, there is life and peace.”
Romans 12:2 “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – His good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Proverbs 4:23 “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.”
2 Corinthians 10:5b “We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
James 4:1 “What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you?”
Living with Purpose and Significance
We win with purpose. Champions discover God’s specific plan for their lives and the ways He has gifted them, then put this into action within their church and community. We are divinely empowered to fulfill God’s purposes for our existence. The great benefit of this win is a life of significance!
Jeremiah 29:11 “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’”
1 Corinthians 12:4-11 (NLT) “There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. ... 7 A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. ... 11 It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.”
Living Within Community
Champions embrace the team. We win within a community of faith. This win is experienced by becoming contributing members of God’s family, the church, and the community in which He has placed us. This empowers us to win against isolation. Champions are followers of Jesus who know joy and success are increased in the context of a life-giving church where we influence others, and they influence us to higher levels of living. Champions influence their communities, schools, and workplaces to be better.
Hebrews 10:24-25 (MSG) “Let’s see how inventive we can be in encouraging love and helping out, 25 not avoiding worshiping together as some do but spurring each other on, especially as we see the big Day approaching.”
1 Corinthians 14:12b “Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church.”
Work and Finances
We win vocationally and financially by becoming skillful overseers of the resources, skills, and opportunities God entrusts to us. Champions are Christ First Christians giving proper oversight to their finances and vocations. Champions know that becoming skillful and trustworthy with what they have, allows God to trust them with more.
Romans 14:12 “So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.”
Malachi 3:8-11 (NLT) “Should people cheat God? Yet you have cheated Me! But you ask, ‘What do you mean? When did we ever cheat You?’ You have cheated Me of the tithes and offerings due to Me. 9 You are under a curse, for your whole nation has been cheating me. 10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in My Temple. If you do, I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put Me to the test! 11 Your crops will be abundant, for I will guard them from insects and disease. Your grapes will not fall from the vine before they are ripe,’ says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.”
Matthew 25:14-21 (NLT) “Again, the Kingdom of Heaven can be illustrated by the story of a man going on a long trip. He called together his servants and entrusted his money to them while he was gone. 15 He gave five bags of silver to one, two bags of silver to another, and one bag of silver to the last — dividing it in proportion to their abilities. He then left on his trip. ... 19 After a long time their master returned from his trip and called them to give an account of how they had used his money. ... 21 The master was full of praise. ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!’”
Serving and Helping Others Win
We win as we complete our mission to reach the world with the good news of Jesus Christ. Champions are kingdom minded. Champions look for the “next person” they can intentionally attract to faith in Jesus and/or His Church. Champions have as their goal a much fuller heaven and a much emptier hell.
Matthew 28:18-20 “Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
John 14:6 “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
John 3:16-18 “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. 18 Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.”

Statement of Faith
HOLY BIBLE
The Holy Bible, and only the Bible, is the authoritative Word of God. It alone is the final authority in determining all doctrinal truths. In its original writing, it is inspired, infallible and inerrant (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20-21; Proverbs 30:5; Romans 16:25-26).
TRINITY
There is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. These three are co-equal and co-eternal (1 John 5:7; Genesis 1:26; Matthew 3:16-17, 28:19; Luke 1:35; Isaiah 9:6; Hebrews 3:7-11).
GOD
God reveals Himself in the Bible as Almighty Father, perfect in love and righteous in all His ways; as Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son; and as Holy Spirit, Lord, and giver of life; each with distinctive personal attributes, but without division of nature, essence or being (Genesis 1:1; Colossians 1:15-20; John 16:13).
JESUS CHRIST
Jesus Christ is God the Son, the second person of the Trinity. On earth, Jesus was 100% God and 100% man. He is the only man ever to have lived a sinless life. He was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, performed miracles, died on the cross for mankind, and thus atoned for our sins through the shedding of His blood. He rose from the dead on the third day according to the Scriptures, ascended to the right hand of the Father, and will return again in power and glory. He is Lord and the only hope for a lost and dying humanity (John 1:1, 14, 20:28; 1 Timothy 3:16; Isaiah 9:6; Philippians 2:5-6; 1 Timothy 2:5).
HOLY SPIRIT
It is the present ministry of the Holy Spirit whose indwelling enables a Christian to live a godly life. He came forth from the Father and Son to convict the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment; and to regenerate, sanctify, comfort, and seal those who believe in Jesus Christ, and to empower them to use spiritual gifts for the carrying out of the work of the Lord Jesus Christ (Acts 2:38; 1 Corinthians 12-14).
VIRGIN BIRTH
Jesus Christ was conceived by God the Father, through the Holy Spirit (the third person of the Trinity) in the virgin Mary’s womb. Therefore, He is the Son of God (Matthew 1:18, 23-25; Luke 1:35; Isaiah 7:14; Luke 1:27-35).
SIN
All people by nature are dead in sins and trespasses, and in this fallen state, we are unable to remedy our lost condition. Jesus Christ is the only Savior of lost mankind, the only way into the presence of the Father, the one whose righteousness we receive by faith (Romans 3:23; 1 Timothy 2:5; John 14:6).
SALVATION
We are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. His death, burial, and resurrection. Salvation is a gift from God, not a result of our good works or of any human efforts. It is God’s desire for none to perish, and He is the one who draws humans to receive His gift of eternal life. Whosoever chooses to respond by faith to the work of God receives God’s free gift of eternal life. (Ephesians 2:8-9; Galatians 2:16, 3:8; Titus 3:5; Romans 10:9-10; Acts 16:31; Hebrews 9:22, John 3:16-18, 1 Peter 3:18, 2 Peter 3:9, John 14:6, John 6:44).
REPENTANCE
Repentance is the commitment to turn away from sin in every area of our lives and to follow Christ, which allows us to receive His redemption and to be regenerated by the Holy Spirit. Thus for the Christian, repentance is the action that opens the way for us to receive forgiveness. (Acts 2:21, 3:19; 1 John 1:9).
SANCTIFICATION
Sanctification is the ongoing process of yielding to God’s Word and His Spirit in order to complete the development of Christ’s character in us. It is through the present ministry of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God that the Christian is enabled to live a godly life (1 Thessalonians 4:3, 5:23; 2 Corinthians 3:18, 6:14-18; 2 Thessalonians 2:1-3; Romans 8:29, 12:1-2; Hebrews 2:11).
JESUS’ BLOOD
The blood that Jesus Christ shed on the Cross of Calvary was sinless and is 100% sufficient to cleanse mankind of all sin. Jesus allowed Himself to be punished for both our sinfulness and our sins, enabling all those who believe to be free from the penalty of sin, to receive the righteousness of Jesus, and the authority of Jesus. (1 John 1:7; Revelation 1:5, 5:9; Colossians 1:20; Romans 3:10-12, 23, 5:9; John 1:29).
THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
The Holy Spirit is manifested through a variety of spiritual gifts to build and sanctify the church, demonstrate the validity of the resurrection, and confirm the power of the Gospel. The Bible’s lists of these gifts are not necessarily exhaustive, and the gifts may occur in various combinations. All believers are commanded to earnestly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gifts that "build up the church." These gifts always operate in harmony with the Scriptures and should never be used in violation of biblical parameters (Hebrews 2:4; Romans 1:11,12:4-8; Ephesians 4:16; 2 Timothy 1:5-16, 4:14; 1 Corinthians 12:1-31, 14:1-40; 1 Peter 4:10).
THE CHURCH
The very nature and purpose of God is revealed in His Church, the "Body of Christ." The Church Universal consists of all who live under Jesus’ Lordship, and the Church Local is a body of believing people, joined together and practicing the New Covenant. The goal of His Church is to glorify God and fulfill Jesus' Great Commission. Every person who is born of the Spirit is an integral part of the church as a member of the body of believers. There is a spiritual unity of all believers in our Lord Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:22, 2:19-22; Hebrews 12:23; John 17:11, 20-23; Acts 15:22; Matthew 16:18, 18:15-20, 28:18-19).
PRIESTHOOD OF THE BELIEVER
By the shedding of His blood, Jesus has become the believer’s High Priest and has made it possible for each Christian to have free access to the presence of the Father. In His presence, each Christian can come to know God and receive from Him (1 Peter 2:9-10; Hebrews 4:14 -16; 10:19-22).
FREEDOM OF CONSCIENCE
Each person is responsible for his or her choices and behavior. Pastors and teachers should provide leadership and direction, but service should be rendered voluntarily, joyfully and from a free conscience (Romans 14:9-12; Philippians 2:5-8; John 10:14-18; 2 Corinthians 9:6-7).
TWO SACRAMENTS
Water Baptism: Following faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, the new believer is commanded by the Word of God to be baptized in water in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. We believe the Biblical model is Believer’s Baptism (post salvation) by immersion. While Baptism is an act of obedience it is not a work of salvation, but rather a sign to the world that salvation by faith through grace has been received (Matthew 28:19; Acts 2:38).
Communion / The Lord’s Supper: A unique time of communion in the presence of God when the elements of bread and juice (the Body and Blood of the Lord Jesus Christ) are taken in remembrance of Jesus’ sacrifice on the Cross. We believe Communion or the Lord’s Supper, is for believers in Christ and should be regularly celebrated in remembrance of Him (Matthew 26:26-29; Mark 16:16; Acts 8:12, 36-38; 10:47-48; 1 Corinthians 10:16, 11:23-25).
TITHES AND OFFERINGS
The Church should be supported by the tithes and offerings of those committed to its mission. We further believe that when God’s people give with a free spirit, there will be ample financial provision to accomplish God’s purpose (Genesis 14:17-20; Malachi 3:6-12; 2 Corinthians 8:1-7; 9:10-13; Luke 11:42).
CHRIST’S RETURN
Jesus Christ will return to earth in a visible way and Christians are exhorted to be watchful and obedient until His appearing. There are diverse viewpoints concerning the timing and circumstances of His second coming and, until He comes Christians should give full attention to obedience. We believe His appearing will occasion the resurrection of the righteous who have died and who are now with Him (1 Corinthians 15:50-58; Acts 1:11; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18).
JUDGMENT
At the end of the age, the righteous and the wicked shall stand before Him and be judged. Those who have righteousness produced by faith will be rewarded with His eternal blessings. Those who are wicked will be eternally punished (Matthew 25:31-46; 2 Thessalonians 1:5-10; Revelation 20:11-15).
APOSTLE’S CREED
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He arose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
HEALING OF THE SICK
Healing of the sick is illustrated in the life and ministry of Jesus, and included in the commission of Jesus to His disciples. It is given as a responsibility of the church. It is also a part of Jesus’ work on the cross and one of the gifts of the Spirit (Psalm 103:2-3; Isaiah 53:5; Matthew 8:16-17; Mark 16:17-18; Acts 8:6-7; James 5:14-16; 1 Corinthians 12:9, 28; Romans 11:29).
GOD’S WILL FOR PROVISION
It is the Father’s will for believers to become whole, healthy and successful in all areas of life. But because we live in a fallen world, our free will, the free will of others, the schemes of the evil one, and the consequences of sin all work to diminish God's desire and intent for our lives. That fact, though, should never prevent all believers from seeking the full benefits of Christ’s provision in order to better serve others.
Spiritual (John 3:3-11; 2 Corinthians 5:17-21; Romans 10:9-10)
Mental and Emotional (2 Timothy 1:7, 2:11; Philippians 4:7-8; Romans 12:2; Isaiah 26:3)
Physical (Isaiah 53:4,5; Matthew 8:17; 1 Peter 2:24)
Financial (Joshua 1:8; Malachi 3:10-11; Luke 6:38; 2 Corinthians 9:6-10; Deuteronomy 28:1-14; Psalm 34:10, 84:11; Philippians 4:19)
CIVIL AUTHORITY
God is the author of all authority, and has ordained civil government for the establishment of order and peace in the nations. He also has ordained spiritual government in His Church, and there should be mutual respect between civil and spiritual authority. Civil authority is separated from church government, but should not be separated from God and His law (Romans 13; Daniel 2:21-22; Acts 4:18-20).
EVANGELISM
We accept the commission of Jesus Christ to make disciples of all nations, to baptize them, and teach them to observe His commandments. We join with all those believing in Him to accomplish this urgent task, and accept this as a personal commission as well as a command to the entire Church (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:20).
MARRIAGE
Marriage should be held in honor by all and is more than partnership; it is union through mutual submission. Marriage is given by God as an expression of covenant love and sacrifice between a man and woman. Procreation and maturation should take place in the context of covenant love, security, discipline and identity. The increased divorce rate is a tragedy of our times, and deeply affects all of our lives. We seek to serve redemptively in the lives of those who have been touched by divorce, and preventively in the lives of those who are joined in marriage. “Let marriage be held in honor among all.” (Hebrews 13:4)
It is our conviction that marriage is to be entered into reverently, soberly and in the fear of God. Weddings at Champions Way Church or by the ministers of Champions Way Church are an extension of Christian worship, which honor the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman.
LIFE
God has given His Commandments for our good and when properly administered will bless all of society. The moral relativism and situational ethics of present day culture are often in direct contrast to God’s truth as revealed in the Scriptures. The Word of God teaches us to honor life at every level from conception to old age. Life itself is a gift, and we are called to protect the defenseless and unwanted. We believe both abortion and euthanasia are wrongful and preemptive terminations of life. Likewise, biogenetic engineering which dehumanizes and depersonalizes life into non-human research and “throw-away parts” is of deep moral concern. Scientific advances do not negate God’s glory and the inherent value and stewardship of human life (Psalm 139; Galatians 1:15; Genesis 2:7).
IDENTITY
Our identity is in Christ and it is His Word that is to govern our lives and lifestyles. We believe heterosexual marriage is God’s design for sexual relations and procreation. As with all sexual immorality, we believe the practice of fornication, adultery, and homosexuality is a behavioral choice that is contrary to the Word of God. Sexual immorality of any kind is grievous to our Creator, and we are committed to God’s redeeming grace and love which is able to reconcile and restore (Romans 1:24-27; Ephesians 2:3-4; Galatians 5:19–23).

AFFILIATIONS
Champions Way Church is proud to affiliate with the Association of Related Churches (ARC).
The ARC is not a denomination. It is an interdenominational association of churches dedicated to creating life-giving churches. There are several ARC Churches in St. Johns and Duval counties. Champions Way is honored to serve along-side them and every church who claims Jesus Christ is Lord to bless the First Coast.
Champions Way Church is also proud to affiliate with the Jacksonville Baptist Association (JBA).
Champions Way is currently in a "watch care" relationship with the Jacksonville Baptist Association. This is the entry stage of uniting with this great organization. The JBA has a strong commitment to reaching the unchurched and the spiritually lost through church planting. Their track record of love and ministry within the First Coast is filled with decades of proven actions.
Champions Way is also sponsoring the start of a sister church in Jacksonville, FL. That church is City.Church. City.Church launched on Feb. 8 in the San Marco area of Jacksonville in February 2015. City.Church is led by Rev. Blake Bennett (Pastor Gregg's oldest son).
Our strategic plan at Champions Way is to direct 10% of all funds received to mission work. Each year the leadership decides how to direct these funds. For this year, we have chosen to direct 20% of these funds to the Association of Related Churches and 80% of these missions funds to City.Church to help them through their early years. We believe the local church is the hope of the world. We believe it so much we are helping start another church even as we are starting!
